We could be locked into 1.5 degrees before Trump leaves Office

Carbon Brief today published an analysis of our chances of keeping temperature down to 1.5 degrees above pre-industrial levels – and what it means compared to 2 degrees.  The scary findings suggest that in order to hold the 1.5 degree line committed to at the Paris Agreement, “…global carbon emissions would need to immediately begin plunging, faster than they ever have, and hit zero by 2050 (and then go negative).  That would require the equivalent of the US mobilization for World War II, only global, and sustained for the rest of the century. The chances of that happening seem … remote. For all we know, Trump will still be in office when the 1.5 degree budget is used up.”

Still, the authors argue, “… we should be clear about the decision we are making, even if we’re only making it by not making a decision.” And they put it in an easily understandable graphic:

Another fortnight of heatwaves, double the loss of freshwater, complete destruction of coral reefs…makes you think we really ought do something to prevent this, doesn’t it? Well…

UK investment in renewable energy fell by 56% last year.  The government will have lots of statements about our being on track etc etc but we know they won’t be for much longer.  If only we could harness all that hot air…
