And Now – The All Electric Ferry!

Norway has once again showed how to make the best of their oil investment by being the first to launch an all electric ferry service. It’s capable of carrying 120 cars and 360 passengers over a three and a half mile journey that takes about 20 minutes, and it recharges in the ten-minute break between each journey. The ferry crosses 34 times a day between two villages opposite each other in a norwegian fjord and travels at ten knots. So not the fastest, or the longest journey, and not the biggest boat, but certainly the lowest carbon footprint!  All very exciting…

The new environment friendly vessel will annually cut down the use of one million litres of diesel and reduce 570t of carbon dioxide and 15t of nitrogen oxide emissions when compared to conventional ferries plying on the same route.  And just in case you were thinking of asking where the electricity comes from – It’s hydro.
