Funding for Scottish islands to ditch single-use packaging
… a total of £600,000 in grant funding provided by the Scottish Government and European Regional Development Fund to empower shops, from Shetland to Arran and all the islands in between, to take the next steps in the war on waste by ditching single-use packaging and moving to reusable options. Single use grocery packaging, from tubs and trays to bottles and bags account for around 13 per cent of all household waste across the country.

Some time ago Michael Gove, then Minister for the Environment was promising legislation to put a tax on single use plastic and a plastic bottle return scheme. What has happened to these and other promised “greening policies” to make us proud of a Government who were going to be the champions of the environment. They are sitting in a log jam of new environmental legislation on the desk of No. 10. Covid 19 has distracted the Government from the fact that Climate Change and our trashing of the planet continues unabated each and every day. All we have seen is a ban on plastic straws and cotton buds.
