This Guardian article is bound to grab the headlines but readers should be aware that there is a great deal of research going on to find alternative materials for making e.v. batteries. Early results are encouraging. More common materials, including silicon and carbon are showing promise. Smaller batteries, larger capacity, quicker charging and lower cost. Perhaps it will not be long before there is less need for lithium and e. v. prices will nearer match petrol vehicles.
