Responding to national and local consultations on climate change related issues<\/strong>
\n<\/em><\/span><\/dt>\n
We urged the government not to scrap the support for the installation of solar photo-voltaic panels. The government did decide to savagely reduce the support but as not as much as was planned. (Since March 2020 this support has sadly been withdrawn.)<\/span><\/dd>\n<\/dl>\n
\n
Community workshop on the draft Local Cycling and Walking Implementation Plan<\/span><\/span><\/i><\/strong><\/dt>\n
We held a workshop in June 2023 to help develop a response to the draft LCWIP<\/a>. <\/span>We recognise that the Plan represents an opportunity to gain funding to improve local facilities for Cycling and Walking which is an essential part of reducing carbon emissions and achieving Net Zero.<\/span><\/dd>\n<\/dl>\n

Listening to our Young People<\/i><\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/dt>\n

\nFollowing our formal AGM business we are going to listen to the views of young people on the climate and biodiversity crises. We\u2019ve invited a group of young people who will get the debate started. The panel includes Jess Walton from the Marches Energy Agency<\/a>; Xander Wood from the Woodland Trust<\/a> Youth Council; Amber Quraishi from the National Highways<\/a>Carbon team; Jack Garner and Lucy Ockenden from Church Stretton School<\/a>.<\/span><\/dd>\n<\/dl>\n

Campaigning for a plastics free Church Stretton<\/em><\/span><\/strong><\/h4>\n<\/dt>\n
Supporting Plastic Free July<\/a>, by featuring the campaign on the Stretton Climate Care stall at the Church Stretton Family fun day<\/a>, 1 July 2023. We will be participating again on 8 June 2024.
\nWe were on hand outside the Midcounties Co-operative Food store in November 2023 to advise on Plastics recycling – what can (and cannot) be recycled.<\/p>\n

Supporting suitable developments that will reduce our impact on climate change<\/em><\/span><\/strong><\/dt>\n

\nWe supported the proposed solar farm near Acton Scott which will provide green electricity for about 1400 households. We went to the Planning Committee to explain our support. Although it was refused permission against the advice of officers, we supported the appeal and this has been allowed by the Planning Inspectorate. We also sought and achieved changes to the design of the Leisure Centre to reduce its carbon emissions and gained a virtually free makeover for the Town Council offices.<\/span><\/dd>\n<\/dl>\n

Improving facilities for pedestrians and cyclists in Church Stretton<\/em><\/span><\/strong><\/dt>\n
<\/dd>\n
We supported the proposals to improve pedestrian footways in High street and provide more bicycle parking. These modes of transport do not impact on climate change and should be encouraged. We were disappointed the proposals in High Street were abandoned and would like to see Shropshire Council bring forward consultations on new proposals.<\/span><\/dd>\n<\/dl>\n

Campaigning for a better electric Vehicle Charging Network In Shropshire<\/span><\/em><\/strong><\/dt>\n
<\/dd>\n
Our call for this vital infrastructure which is notably lacking in Shropshire compared to almost everywhere else has been supported by our MP, Philip Dunne. We are pleased that an additional Charge point has recently been installed off Dobby\u2019s island and as of May 2020 a new rapid charging point has been installed in the main Co-op car Park. Air pollution from vehicles in Shrewsbury is still exceeding legal guidelines and though the government are seeking to encourage low emission vehicles progress is Shropshire is very slow.<\/span><\/dd>\n<\/dl>\n

We use social media to communicate and publicise our concerns and to network with other organisations on issues relating to climate change<\/span><\/dd>\n<\/dl>\n

Raising concerns with elected representatives on climate change issues<\/em><\/span><\/strong><\/dt>\n
We continue to press our MP Phillip Dunne ( who now is chairman of the Government Environmental Audit Committee<\/a>) to do more to see carbon reduction meet the legal target for Zero Carbon by 2050 and lobby Shropshire Council at every opportunity.<\/span><\/dd>\n<\/dl>\n
