20’s Plenty Presentation – David Currant

Stretton Climate Care has arranged a meeting to set out the case for establishing a 20mph speed limit throughout the Town. This will be held at 7.30pm on Thursday 25th May 2023 in the Parish Centre, Church Street, Church Stretton.

David Currant of Ludlow 21 and South Shropshire Climate Action is our Speaker. He is leading the county wide campaign for the introduction of 20mph speed limits in towns. This would significantly reduce the risk of serious injury or death for pedestrians and cyclists in collision with a car or van. It would also encourage more cycling and walking with environmental and health benefits. It is of relevance in considering Shropshire Council’s draft Local Cycling and Walking Implementation  Plan.

David has a background in IT for manufacturing industry and also has experience in adult education and local tourism.   Since retirement he has put his energies into supporting local environmental sustainability working with Ludlow 21, Shropshire Environmental Alliance, Green Shropshire Xchange and various county-wide initiatives. More recently he has concentrated on transport issues heading the Ludlow 21 campaign for 20 mph default speed limits in the town and leading on Active Travel for South Shropshire Climate Action.

David’s presentation will explore the many benefits of slower speed limits in built-up areas.   These include carbon reduction and improved community life as well as the the more obvious ones of health and safety and enabling active travel. We shall look at the current progress towards a national default 20 mph speed limit, how Shropshire fits into the picture and how you as a community can help this to progress.

Everyone welcome. Members are people under 18 free. £5 charge for non-members (Joining fee is £7.50)

Other local events are also planned.

No mention of collisions between cyclists and pedestrians!
How will the 20 limit be enforced for cyclists who race along Shrewsbury Road, High Street and Ludlow Road?
